Aunt Mary's Puppy Socialization Class 2005
Puppy socialization class (puppy kindergarten) is a way to provide a safe
environment for young puppies to learn to interact with each other and with
human
beings so that they can begin to develop the social skills needed to be good
canine citizens! The critical socialization period is from 3 to 12 weeks, so
we try to get the puppies started young enough that they are still able to
accept new experiences without being too fearful. This is not to say that
socialization is all done at 12 weeks--it's actually a process that should
continue
for the life of the dog--but it sure helps to get started early!
I offer a four week class aimed at puppies from 10-20 weeks old. To enter, a
puppy must be at least 10 weeks (but not more than 20 weeks) as of the first
class session, in good health, and have had a minimum of 2 vaccinations. In
the classes, we let the puppies play together so that they can learn the social
skills necessary to interact with their own species. We also begin early
training (come when called, sit, down, stay, walk nicely on lead, etc.) and talk
about leadership skills for owners. The puppies are handled by all the humans
in the class so that they get used to people other than just their owners.
Even riding in the car to class is helpful!
All training is based on positive reinforcement. The only equipment needed
is a flat buckle collar, 6 foot non-retractable lead, and treats (ideally
something tasty and soft, in little pieces that can be eaten quickly--low salt
hot
dogs, cheese, semi-moist dog food). Don't feed the puppy for 6 hours prior to
class. Each puppy should bring one human to serve as the handler--other
family members are welcome, especially children, but we must remember that the
focus of the class is the puppies, and behave accordingly.
Classes are taught at my home in the University area, rain or shine, on 4
consecutive Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm, usually lasting about 90 minutes. The
cost is $60 for the 4 week session, payable with pre-registration Cost
includes instruction time and materials. Class size is limited to 6 puppies.
Two
weeks prior to each new session I send out a mailing to all Mallard Creek
Animal Hospital clients who have puppies that fit the age criteria. If you are
not a client but you are interested in the class, call the practice at
704-598-6525 and leave a message for Dr. Fluke.
As well as being a veterinarian, Dr. Fluke is also a member of the
Association of Pet Dog Trainers and is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer.
